Hyderabad: K. T. Rama Rao appointed senior leaders as special observers for eight municipalities ahead of Tuesday’s municipal chairman elections, citing alleged horse trading and intimidation attempts.
The opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi acted after reports of inducements and pressure tactics aimed at influencing the elections for chairman and vice chairman posts. KTR, the party’s working president, reviewed the situation with local leadership and constituency MLAs before finalising the appointments.
KTR said he had inquired into alleged illegal detentions, threats and police excesses at the local level. He assured party leaders of full backing and said senior leaders would monitor the process on the ground.
According to party sources, the KTR municipal election incharges were tasked with standing by local units and overseeing the conduct of the elections. Soon after the instructions were issued, the appointed leaders left for their assigned municipalities.
The BRS viewed the polls as significant and expected to secure chairman posts in all eight municipalities where elections were scheduled on Tuesday. Therefore, it deployed senior leaders to closely track developments and prevent any irregularities.
