Kavitha demands Sanskrit university in memory of Mallinatha Suri

Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president and MLC K. Kavitha on Friday urged the state government to set up a Sanskrit university at Kolcharam in Medak district to honour Mahakavi Mallinatha Suri.

While touring Medak as part of the Jana Jagruthi Janam Baata outreach programme, Kavitha said the legendary scholar, known as “Vyakhyana Chakravarti,” made Kalidasa’s works globally accessible through his detailed commentaries. She recalled that although the previous government approved the proposal by Sanskrit scholars for a university in his name, it never moved forward with implementation.

Kavitha demands Ghanapuram dam expansion without delay

Kavitha visited the Ghanapuram dam in Kolcharam mandal, the only medium irrigation project in the district. She stressed the urgent need to begin expansion works. The Nizam constructed the dam in 1905, and it currently serves 22,000 acres in Narsapur, Medak, Kolcharam, and Papannapet mandals.

She stated that sediment accumulation had cut its water storage capacity by more than half. The previous government sanctioned ₹48 crore for raising the dam’s height. Some farmers who lost land received compensation, but Kavitha demanded that authorities quickly compensate the rest and start the work.

She criticised the lack of benefits from the Kaleshwaram project in Medak. Raising the Ghanapuram dam’s height, she said, would expand irrigation and reduce flood risk to the Vanadurga Bhavani temple at Yedupayal.

Kavitha performs special puja at Yedupayal temple

Later, Kavitha visited the Vanadurga temple in Yedupayal, where temple priests and staff welcomed her with traditional honours. She received temple offerings and performed a special puja.

Addressing the gathering, she praised the previous government for constructing three bridges over the Manjeera river to ease pilgrim travel. She urged the current administration to take up further development at the site.

A large number of Telangana Jagruthi members attended the events.
