Hyderabad: The KPHB Police arrested an auto driver for stealing ₹10 lakh in an attention diversion case that occurred on November 7 in Kukatpally’s Addagutta Society.
The accused, Mudavath Shankar (26), a native of Nagarkurnool and resident of Suraram, took advantage of a car accident involving the victim, D. Uttam Kumar Varma (31). The victim’s vehicle had struck a divider, causing injuries.
Shankar had been following the car in his auto. He approached Varma under the pretext of offering help and towed the damaged vehicle to 7th Gear Automotive Garage in Sanathnagar. Later, he offered to drop Varma home.
However, during the ride, Shankar diverted Varma’s attention and stole a bag containing ₹10 lakh. When the victim discovered the bag was missing, he called Shankar. But by then, the accused had switched off his phone and fled.
Subsequently, on the morning of November 14, KPHB Police apprehended Shankar near Chittaramma Temple in Gajularamaram. They recovered ₹5.32 lakh from his possession, though part of the stolen cash had already been used.
In addition, the police seized the auto used in the offence.

The case, registered as Cr. No. 1481/2025 under Sections 318(4) and 303(2) of the BNS, was solved under the leadership of DCP Balanagar Zone Suresh Kumar IPS. ACP E. Ravikiran Reddy, SHO S. Rajashekar Reddy, DI K.S. Ravi, DSI Abdul Samad, and constables Ramchander, Suresh, and Raghuram also played key roles.
Moreover, police officials announced rewards for the personnel involved in cracking the case.
