Hyderabad Cyber Police warn public against gift fraud scams

Hyderabad: Gift fraud scams trick people with promises of free gifts and attractive prizes, Hyderabad Cyber Police warned as part of its “Jagrut Hyderabad – Surakshit Hyderabad” awareness campaign.

The Cyber Crimes Unit issued an advisory cautioning citizens against fraudulent messages claiming that recipients have won expensive gifts or rewards. Officials said scammers use such messages to steal money and sensitive personal information from unsuspecting victims.

According to the advisory, fraudsters circulate fake offers through SMS, WhatsApp, email and social media platforms. They create excitement and urgency before demanding processing charges, delivery fees or claim amounts.

Gift fraud scams target money and personal information

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Cyber Police urged people to verify gift offers only through official websites and trusted sources. Officials advised citizens not to pay any claim, processing or delivery charges for prizes linked to unsolicited messages.

The advisory also warned people against sharing OTPs, bank account details, CVV numbers, passwords or other confidential information. Cyber criminals often misuse such details to access bank accounts and commit financial fraud.

In addition, officials urged citizens to avoid clicking suspicious links received through digital platforms. They said fraudulent links may redirect users to fake websites designed to capture personal information.

The Cyber Crimes Unit urged the public to remain cautious whenever an offer appears unusually attractive. Officials said people should treat offers that seem too good to be true with suspicion.

Police also appealed to citizens to share cyber safety messages with family members and friends. The department said public awareness remains one of the most effective tools for preventing online fraud and financial crimes.
