Governor praises Cheriyal Nakashi art, calls for preservation of Telangana heritage
Hyderabad: Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla praised Cheriyal Nakashi art and stressed the need to preserve the State’s traditional folk heritage.
Nakashi masks featuring the centuries-old art form became a special attraction at the Independence Day At Home reception at Lok Bhavan on Saturday evening.
As part of the reception arrangements, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and his wife Janaki Shukla viewed the Nakashi masks displayed at Lok Bhavan.
The Governor appreciated the intricate craftsmanship and distinctive features of the masks. He also praised Nakashi artist Danalakota Rakesh for his efforts to preserve and promote the traditional craft.
Rakesh explained the distinctive features of the art form to the Governor and his wife. He also described the mask-making process and the traditional knowledge associated with the craft.
Rakesh said he learnt the art from his father, renowned Nakashi artist Danalakota Vaikuntham. He also recalled his father’s contribution to taking Cheriyal Nakashi art to national prominence.
Cheriyal Nakashi art reflects Telangana’s cultural traditions
Rakesh recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appreciated Danalakota Vaikuntham’s talent and efforts to preserve the Nakashi tradition during his Mann Ki Baat programme in 2024.
He said the recognition helped introduce the centuries-old folk art tradition to people across the country. The appreciation also drew attention to the work of Cheriyal-based artisans.
A collection of Nakashi paintings depicting Telangana’s culture and traditions was also displayed at the Durbar Hall of Lok Bhavan.
The collection featured themes including Bathukamma, episodes from the Ramayana and Krishna Leela. It also included scenes depicting rural women and the birth of Lord Ganesha.
The Governor said Cheriyal Nakashi painting held a special place in Telangana’s folk-art heritage. He stressed the need to encourage traditional art forms and recognise the contributions of artisans.
Shukla also emphasised the importance of preserving these cultural traditions for future generations. He called for continued efforts to protect the artistic knowledge associated with Cheriyal Nakashi art.
The Nakashi masks and paintings remained part of the Independence Day At Home reception arrangements at Lok Bhavan on Saturday evening.
