Hyderabad: Godavari Krishna floods intensified across Telangana on Friday as continuous rainfall in Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka pushed heavy inflows into major reservoirs. Irrigation authorities opened floodgates at several projects and released excess water downstream as river levels continued to rise.
The Kadem Project received an inflow of 1.31 lakh cusecs. Officials opened all 16 floodgates to discharge water downstream. The Yellampalli Project received 4.16 lakh cusecs, prompting authorities to lift 30 gates. Meanwhile, the Pranahita River carried an inflow of 3.31 lakh cusecs, while Sammakkasagar handled a total flood flow of 9.36 lakh cusecs.
Flood levels also increased in the Krishna basin as upstream reservoirs released water after reaching higher storage levels. The Jurala Project received an inflow of 1 lakh cusecs, and officials opened 17 gates to release water towards the Srisailam Reservoir.
Nagarjunasagar received an inflow of 19,000 cusecs on Thursday. Pump operations also continued to lift water from Yellampalli to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme despite rising river levels.
Godavari Krishna floods increase downstream releases
Official data showed that 10 TMC of Krishna River water flowed into Andhra Pradesh during the 24-hour period between 6 pm on July 29 and 6 pm on July 30. The inflow into the Srisailam Reservoir stood at 1,12,753 cusecs during the same period.
The Godavari basin also witnessed substantial downstream flows. About 29.57 TMC of Godavari water entered Andhra Pradesh in the last 24 hours. Seasonal data showed that 165.37 TMC had already flowed downstream during the current water year.
The water discharge at the Medigadda barrage reached 3,31,265 cusecs on Thursday. Irrigation authorities continued monitoring river levels and reservoir inflows as heavy rainfall persisted across the river catchment areas.
