Hyderabad: Dowry harassment allegations emerged after a 20-year-old married woman died by suicide in Kothakota police limits on Tuesday. Police registered a case based on a complaint from the deceased woman’s mother and began an investigation.
According to the complaint, Usha Rani belonged to Kanimetta village in Kothakota mandal. Her mother, Boyini Padmamma, said she married Itta Mallesh from Nagaram village in Devarakadra mandal on 25-06-2026.
Padmamma stated that her family gave 6 tolas of gold and Rs 2 lakh as dowry during the marriage. Mallesh reportedly runs a clothing shop, according to the complaint.
However, Padmamma alleged that Mallesh had become addicted to alcohol over the past month. She alleged that he subsequently demanded an additional Rs 20 lakh and subjected Usha Rani to mental and physical harassment.
Usha Rani reportedly informed her family about the alleged harassment. Her relatives then advised the couple and sent her back to her husband, but the alleged harassment continued, according to the complaint.
The complaint also alleged that Mallesh’s mother Anjalamma and father Hanmanthu joined him in demanding additional dowry. Usha Rani reportedly told her family about the alleged harassment during phone conversations.
On Tuesday afternoon, Usha Rani reportedly went to her mother’s house. Later that evening, at around 4 pm, a relative named Shiva called Padmamma with information about the incident.
Padmamma said she immediately went to the house and found her daughter dead. She alleged that Usha Rani took the extreme step because she could not bear the alleged dowry harassment.
Dowry harassment allegations prompt police investigation
Padmamma sought legal action against Mallesh, Anjalamma and Hanmanthu. She specifically alleged that the three family members had harassed her daughter over additional dowry.
Based on her complaint, Kothakota police registered a case and started an investigation. SI M. Vikram confirmed that police were investigating the allegations.
The complaint alleged that the family had initially provided 6 tolas of gold and Rs 2 lakh at the time of marriage. It further alleged that Mallesh later demanded an additional Rs 20 lakh.
Police were examining the circumstances surrounding Usha Rani’s death and the allegations made by her mother. The claims against the husband and in-laws remained allegations under investigation.
The case followed Usha Rani’s death at her family home on Tuesday. Her mother subsequently approached the police seeking action against the three accused family members.
Authorities were continuing their inquiry into the allegations and circumstances surrounding the death. Further details were expected to emerge as the investigation progressed.
