Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy has warned of strict legal action against those misusing social media to spread fake news or defame individuals. Cases of online defamation fake news have become an increasing concern for authorities.
Reiterating his earlier stance, he said that anyone targeting individuals or families online would face consequences under the law. He made these remarks while addressing rising concerns about online abuse, misinformation, and the rise of online defamation fake news in digital spaces.
DGP cautions against crossing legal boundaries on social media
Reddy stated that using social media for character assassination or spreading falsehoods like fake news will not be tolerated. “If you circulate fake news or attempt personal defamation under the guise of social media, action will be taken,” he warned.
He clarified that the police respect lawful criticism expressed respectfully. However, he stressed that deliberate personal attacks or online defamation fake news would invite legal steps.
“Criticise within the law, within four walls no issue. But cross that line, and strict action will follow,” he said.
The police have started monitoring social media content more closely. Reddy urged users to avoid posts that damage reputations or spread lies.
