Danam Nagender welcomes Supreme Court verdict, prepares for Khairatabad bypoll

Hyderabad: Danam Nagender welcomed the Supreme Court verdict upholding his disqualification from the Telangana Assembly and said he was ready for the Khairatabad by-election. He said he had pursued the legal battle while respecting the constitutional and judicial process.

Danam Nagender said he had expected the Supreme Court to deliver its verdict in the same direction. However, he said he had hoped for some legal relief under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which deals with the anti-defection law.

“I expected the court verdict to come this way. However, I believed I would get some legal relief under the provisions of the Tenth Schedule (Anti-Defection Law). That is why I made all the legally required efforts,” Danam said.

He said he would now leave his political future to the public arena. The Supreme Court’s decision has left the Khairatabad Assembly seat vacant and paved the way for a by-election.

Danam Nagender prepares for Khairatabad bypoll

Danam Nagender said he had begun preparing for the by-election in advance. He referred to his longstanding association with voters in Khairatabad and said he had remained connected with them over the years.

He said he would approach voters during the by-election and seek their support. Danam also expressed confidence that the people of Khairatabad would continue to support him.

The Supreme Court decision followed Danam’s challenge to a Telangana High Court order that disqualified him from the Assembly. He had approached the apex court after the High Court ruling.

Danam had won the Khairatabad Assembly seat as a BRS candidate. He later joined the Congress and contested the Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad.

The Telangana High Court subsequently ruled against him on the defection issue. Danam challenged that order before the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court heard the matter and dismissed his petition, thereby upholding the High Court decision. The ruling resulted in the Khairatabad Assembly constituency being officially declared vacant.

The vacancy has made a by-election necessary, with Danam Nagender now indicating that he would return to the electorate and seek a fresh mandate.
