Crime report shows 15% dip: CP Sajjanar at annual meet

Hyderabad: The annual crime report recorded a 15 per cent reduction in overall crime in Hyderabad, Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said while releasing the report.

While addressing the media, Sajjanar said police registered 30,690 FIRs this year, compared to 35,944 cases last year. However, he added that crimes against women and POCSO cases rose during the same period.

According to the crime report, police registered 176 cases of attempt to murder and 166 kidnapping cases. In addition, officers booked 4,536 cheating cases. Meanwhile, crimes against women increased by six per cent, including 405 rape cases and 119 kidnapping cases. Sajjanar warned that authorities would take strict action against anyone who took the law into their own hands.

Crime report highlights cyber crime, drugs, traffic

Sajjanar said improved patrolling and enhanced surveillance reduced crime across the city. Consequently, gangs from other states now feared entering Hyderabad due to strong policing. He also said awareness campaigns helped curb cyber crime cases.

The commissioner said police arrested 566 cyber criminals this year and seized 120 bank accounts linked to fraud. Moreover, teams conducted awareness programmes every Tuesday and Saturday, which received strong public response. Sajjanar urged citizens to avoid greed, warning that easy-money offers often led to cyber fraud.

On narcotics, he said the government aimed to build a drug-free society. Accordingly, Hyderabad police treated drug control as a top priority. This year, officers registered 368 drug cases and seized narcotics worth Rs 6.5 crore. He said teams would expand further to dismantle supply networks and ensure strict punishment.

Sajjanar also announced plans to set up an NDPS wing under a DCP-level officer. He said police secured convictions for 4,463 accused this year. On traffic enforcement, he said accidents declined due to sustained action and awareness on drunk driving.

Police booked 49,732 drunk driving cases and filed 5,518 cases of dangerous driving. For New Year celebrations, he said 126 special teams would operate across the city. He appealed to citizens not to drink and drive and to cooperate with the police.

Sajjanar said cyber fraudsters looted Rs 251.14 crore this year, while police recovered Rs 30 crore. He added that special teams now tackled food adulteration. Sajjanar said Telangana Police earned a reputation as one of the best forces in the country and urged restraint in family disputes.
