Bus fire after crash in Markapuram kills 13

Hyderabad: A deadly fire broke out after a private travels bus collided with a tipper lorry near Rayavaram village in Markapuram, killing 13 passengers and injuring several others early Thursday. The fire engulfed the vehicle within minutes of the crash.

Police said the Harikrishna Travels bus was travelling from Jagtial in Telangana to Pamuru. Meanwhile, the tipper rammed the bus on a highway bend, triggering flames immediately after impact.

Officials said 10 passengers died on the spot. Subsequently, three more died while undergoing treatment at the Government General Hospital.

Around 30 passengers were on board at the time of the accident. As a result, several others suffered injuries, with at least five reported to be in critical condition.

Rescue teams shifted the injured to hospitals, including RIMS in Ongole. Meanwhile, police and fire personnel worked to control the blaze after both vehicles were completely gutted.

Officials said most victims were charred beyond recognition. Therefore, teams are working to establish their identities. Some of the deceased included women and children.

Authorities set up a control room to assist families seeking information. They issued helpline numbers 6304285613, 9985733999, and 7989537285.

The accident blocked the highway after both vehicles fell across the road. Consequently, traffic halted, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock and grief. He spoke to district officials and directed them to provide immediate assistance to victims. Meanwhile, Home Minister V. Anitha is heading to the accident site.
