BRS MLAs to visit Medigadda Barrage amid Godavari water push

Hyderabad: A group of BRS MLAs and MLCs will visit the Medigadda Barrage in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district on Saturday, 24 October. The legislators belong to the Greater Hyderabad and combined Rangareddy areas. Notably, the visit forms part of a broader BRS push on Godavari water utilisation amid drought concerns. The leaders plan to reach the barrage around 10:30 am.

First, the group will assemble at Ghatkesar in the morning. After that, the leaders will stop for breakfast at the Warangal residence of former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao. Some former MLAs from the combined Warangal district will also join them there.

Meanwhile, BRS leaders and retired engineers have claimed that large volumes of Godavari water have already flowed unused into the sea. For instance, some reports cite figures of roughly 734–794 TMC.

BRS leaders pitch temporary coffer dam at Medigadda Barrage

In addition, the party leaders and retired engineers claim it is still possible to lift the current river flows. Some accounts put these flows at around 1.15 lakh cusecs. According to them, a temporary coffer dam at Medigadda could potentially allow pumping of about 1.4 TMC of water per day. Furthermore, they link the proposal to the need to address drinking water and irrigation shortages under El Niño conditions.

At the same time, the BRS has demanded a fresh Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the 2023 damage to the seventh pier of the barrage. Party general secretary R.S. Praveen Kumar is leading this demand.

In particular, the party has questioned why a 2023 complaint about a possible explosion near Pier 20 was closed as undetected. Moreover, the BRS has alleged political motives.
