Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders alleged that illegal bridge-cum-barrages on the Krishna and Bhima rivers in Karnataka could adversely affect Telangana’s share of river water. The party also claimed that Karnataka’s reported move to raise the Almatti dam height would threaten water availability in the Palamuru region.
A BRS delegation from the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district visited sites on the Krishna and Bhima rivers on Sunday as part of its ‘Chalo Karnataka’ programme. Former ministers V. Srinivas Goud and Laxma Reddy led the delegation, which included party leaders and farmers.
During the visit, the delegation inspected the structures under construction and alleged that hydraulic gates had also been altered. BRS leaders claimed the projects would allow Karnataka to retain more water upstream, reducing downstream flows into Telangana.

Additionally, the party compared water availability on both sides of the interstate border. BRS leaders claimed reservoirs and agricultural fields in Karnataka had adequate water, while several areas in Telangana faced dry conditions.
The party said its inspection exposed what it described as Karnataka’s attempts to divert more river water. However, the BRS statement did not include a response from the Karnataka government or the concerned authorities regarding the allegations.
