Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Monday filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar. The party alleged that he failed to act on disqualification pleas against 10 MLAs who defected from the party.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the Speaker to finish the inquiry and take action within three months. That deadline ended on October 31. Instead of deciding, the Speaker moved a plea seeking more time to complete the process.
BRS challenges Speaker’s plea, demands swift action
The BRS filed a counter petition, accusing the Speaker of ignoring the Supreme Court’s order and delaying the process. Party leaders said the Speaker had shown open disregard for the directive and used meaningless hearings to buy time.
The party submitted the contempt plea to the Supreme Court registry. Court officials will verify the filing before listing it for hearing. Sources said the case could reach a bench within the next few days.
BRS leaders argued that the delay weakens the anti-defection law and affects public trust in the system. They asked the court to ensure that the disqualification cases are resolved quickly.
