Hyderabad: BJP State President N. Ramchander Rao on Wednesday said the party was entering the Telangana municipal elections with the clear target of securing a 60 per cent victory across municipalities.
Reacting to the release of the election schedule, Ramchander Rao told reporters that the BJP aimed to win at least 70 municipalities. Moreover, he said the party was confident of securing control of a minimum of five municipal corporations.
He added that the BJP would demonstrate its organisational strength in the local body polls. At the same time, he said the elections would help the party expand its base across urban areas.
Meanwhile, the State Election Commission on Tuesday evening released the municipal elections schedule. The notification covered 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations across the state.
According to the schedule, the commission will begin accepting nominations from Wednesday. Thereafter, polling will take place in a single phase on February 11. Subsequently, officials will announce the results on February 13. With the notification, the model code of conduct came into force across Telangana.
BJP outlines strategy after municipal poll schedule
Ramchander Rao said the BJP had already demonstrated its strength in recent Parliament and Gram Panchayat elections. Therefore, he said, the party had remained fully prepared for the municipal polls.
He further said the party would receive detailed reports from all regions by Tuesday evening. After that, the BJP would hold committee meetings and announce candidates without delay.
Meanwhile, targeting rival parties, the BJP leader accused the Congress and BRS of relying only on minority vote-bank politics. In addition, he alleged that the Congress and AIMIM functioned together in the state.
Finally, Ramchander Rao asserted that the BJP would emerge as the principal opposition force in Telangana after the elections. He added that the party would firmly establish its organisational strength through the municipal polls.
