Hyderabad: A Bhimgal tea stall operator died while undergoing treatment after attempting suicide at the Bhimgal police station in Nizamabad district. Polasa Sudhakar, a resident of Devangapalli in Bhimgal town, made the attempt on Monday.
Sudhakar initially received treatment at the Nizamabad government hospital. Doctors later shifted him to a private hospital as his condition worsened. However, he died during treatment, according to the information available.
Sudhakar ran a tea stall near the Bhimgal bus stand. He sold tea, cigarettes, pan masala and other items. His family said police had fined him several times for running the stall after 10 pm.
Two days before the incident, police again imposed a fine on him. Sudhakar went to the police station on Monday to pay the amount. However, police told him they had registered a case and that he should pay the fine in court.
According to his family and local residents, Sudhakar became distressed after receiving the information. He then attempted suicide inside the police station premises. Police and family members shifted him to hospital after the incident.
Bhimgal police station incident draws conflicting claims
Meanwhile, Sudhakar’s family said he named SI Tirupathi in his statement. They claimed the officer had fined him several times.
The family also said Sudhakar mentioned harassment by a businessman and some journalists. According to them, he had repeatedly requested officials to reconsider the fines. They alleged that authorities did not respond to his appeals.
However, Nizamabad Commissioner of Police Sai Chaitanya said the police had committed no wrongdoing. He said a grocery shop owner opposite Sudhakar’s stall had sent two reporters to threaten him.
The CP said the shop owner had sent them because Sudhakar did not buy cigarettes from his shop. He also said police had registered a petty case against Sudhakar for operating the stall at night.
Police have now started a further inquiry into Sudhakar’s death. The investigation will examine the circumstances that led to the incident, the family’s allegations and the police version.
