BC Caste Census in Telangana

Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka clarified concerns regarding the inclusion of certain Muslim minority groups in the BC caste census in Telangana. He reaffirmed that the survey follows existing government orders and assured a transparent and inclusive process.

HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka addressed concerns regarding the inclusion of certain Muslim minority groups in the BC category during a meeting at Praja Bhavan. The meeting presided over by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, aimed to dispel doubts surrounding the ongoing BC caste census in Telangana.

Key attendees included Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, TPCC Chief Mahesh Kumar Goud, government advisors, and leaders from various BC associations.

Deputy CM Vikramarka criticised opposition parties, including BRS and BJP, stating that their objections stem from a reluctance to ensure justice for Backward Class (BC) communities. He clarified that existing government orders already classify certain Muslim minority groups under the BC category. Enumerators have been instructed to record caste affiliations based on these provisions. He further stated that no new government orders have been issued, and those opposing the classification may not be aware of the current regulations.

Increase in OC Population and Survey Process

Addressing concerns over the reported increase in the Other Castes (OC) population, he attributed it to long-standing migrations of communities such as Marwadis to urban areas, naturally leading to a demographic shift.

He assured that the state government is conducting the survey methodically, with survey documents being digitised and securely stored, similar to the handling of ballot papers. Preliminary data suggests that BCs constitute 56% of Telangana’s population.

To ensure maximum participation, the survey period has been extended until February 28, providing multiple avenues for individuals to submit their information, including toll-free numbers, online forms, and local administrative centres.

Call for Transparency and Nationwide Implementation

Vikramarka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to conducting the caste census transparently and called for a nationwide implementation of similar surveys. He urged BC associations to recognise the motives of the opposition and support the government’s efforts in achieving an accurate and inclusive census.
