Hyderabad: Congress MLC Addanki Dayakar on Thursday accused the BRS and BJP of hypocrisy in the wake of the Supreme Court’s order directing the Telangana Assembly Speaker to decide within three months on disqualification petitions filed against MLAs who switched parties.
Addressing the media at the CLP office, Dayakar said both parties had no moral authority to talk about democracy. He welcomed the apex court’s recommendation for a parliamentary law on defections but questioned why BJP’s role in engineering defections across 11 states was not under scrutiny.
“Modi lured Congress MLAs in several states, and KCR followed the same template here. BRS and BJP are no different,” he said.
He pointed out that BRS had previously absorbed MLAs from Congress, TDP, BSP, CPI, and YSRCP, effectively dismantling opposition parties. Now, with 10 MLAs siding with Congress, the party was feigning outrage, he said.
Dayakar accused BRS of using undemocratic methods when in power and invoking constitutional values only when politically threatened. “They remember the Constitution only when they lose ground,” he said.
He added that the Congress would respect the Speaker’s decision and expressed confidence in Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar’s constitutional awareness.
Criticising KCR for failing to uphold his promise of appointing a Dalit Chief Minister, Dayakar said the former CM couldn’t tolerate even a Dalit CLP leader. He said BRS’s current posturing was aimed at rewriting its political image after years of undermining democratic norms.
