Hyderabad: Telangana Minister Vivek Venkataswamy said the state government had given priority to the safety, legal protection and social security of gig and platform workers. He made the remarks while inaugurating Upzy House in Kondapur on Friday.
The facility caters to cab drivers, delivery personnel and other platform workers. Venkataswamy said gig workers had become an important part of Hyderabad’s urban economy. He pointed to their role in delivering food and essential supplies to households.
“Food and essential supplies are delivered to doorsteps within 10 to 15 minutes because of the tireless effort of gig workers. They have become an indispensable part of urban life,” Venkataswamy said.
According to estimates cited by the Minister, Hyderabad had nearly four lakh gig workers. He said the figure reflected their contribution to the city’s commercial activity.
The Vivek Venkataswamy gig workers initiative also addressed some of the practical difficulties faced by workers during their daily schedules. In the past, workers often used roadside locations to take breaks, eat meals and rest.

Meanwhile, Venkataswamy urged workers to use skill development programmes available through the State government’s Advanced Technology Centres. He said additional skills could help them improve their future career prospects.
The Telangana government had also moved to strengthen welfare measures for gig workers. Earlier, the State government reviewed proposals covering welfare support, insurance and a dedicated welfare board for the sector.
