Hyderabad: Peddapalli MP Gaddam Vamsi Krishna secured a European patent for his invention, “Eco Friendly Energy Generating Roof”. The European Patent Office (EPO) granted it after examining his application.
The EPO assigned the invention European Patent No. 3601699. The application carried the number 17902782.6.
According to the EPO communication, Vamsi Krishna holds the patent as its applicant and proprietor. He filed the application on November 14, 2017, based on an Indian application with a priority date of March 31, 2017.
Vamsi Krishna welcomed the EPO decision. He described it as recognition for an Indian innovation in sustainable energy. He also said the grant strengthened global protection for the technology.
European patent covers ATUM solar roof technology
The invention, popularly known as ATUM, combines roofing material with electricity generation. It uses solar cells laminated with specially treated fibre cement boards.
The integrated design turns the roof into a solar power-generating system. It also aims to provide a durable and weather-resistant roofing solution.
Vamsi Krishna said the concept was to make roofs generate power while retaining strength and appearance. He added that the patent would further protect the technology internationally.
The EPO decision covers several designated contracting states. These include Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey, among others.
Meanwhile, the EPO plans to publish the grant in European Patent Bulletin 26/41 on October 7, 2026. The publication will allow the patent holder to pursue national validation in EPC states.
Where applicable, the technology can also receive Unitary Patent protection in participating European Union member states. The invention already has patent protection in India, the United States and South Africa.
ATUM is stated to generate 20 to 40 per cent more power than conventional solar roofs covering the same area. The technology targets affordable housing, net-zero buildings and commercial establishments.
The grant marks another step in expanding ATUM’s protection across European patent jurisdictions.
