Hyderabad: A Bay of Bengal cyclone had intensified and triggered warnings of heavy to very heavy rain across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Meteorological Department said the system could bring intense rainfall to several Telangana districts for three days.
Officials said the storm was located about 310 km from Puri, 390 km from Kalingapatnam and 470 km from Visakhapatnam. Meanwhile, the system was expected to move gradually northwestward before crossing the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur.
The expected landfall was projected between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. As a result, officials warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Telangana during the period.
North Telangana was expected to receive particularly intense rainfall. Officials said several districts could experience very heavy rain under the influence of the Bay of Bengal cyclone.
For Wednesday, authorities forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu and Bhadradri-Kothagudem. Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanamkonda were also included in the forecast.
Officials also identified Kumram Bheem-Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial and Rajanna Sircilla among the districts facing heavy to very heavy rain. Karimnagar, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Janagam and Siddipet were also placed under the rainfall warning.
Bay of Bengal cyclone raises red alert across districts
Following the forecast, authorities issued a red alert for the respective districts. The warning covered areas expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday.
In addition, the Meteorological Department indicated that the cyclone’s influence could continue to affect Telangana for three days. Officials particularly highlighted the northern districts because of the possibility of very heavy rainfall.
The system was also expected to affect Andhra Pradesh, with officials monitoring its projected movement toward the coast. Its anticipated path remained between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, according to the information provided.
Earlier, the weather system had remained as a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Officials said it subsequently developed into a severe cyclonic circulation, increasing the rainfall threat across the two states.
The forecast placed Puri, Kalingapatnam and Visakhapatnam at varying distances from the storm’s reported centre. Therefore, authorities continued to highlight the possibility of significant rainfall as the system moved northwestward.
The rainfall warning remained focused on Telangana districts, particularly those in the north. Officials said the expected conditions could bring heavy to very heavy rain through the affected period.
