UoH contract workers launch indefinite protest over pending demands

Hyderabad: Contract workers at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Tuesday launched an indefinite protest, demanding equal pay for equal work, regularisation of their services and the fulfilment of several long-pending demands by the university administration.

The protesters alleged that the implementation of the new labour codes had weakened job security, reduced workplace protections and diluted existing labour rights. They claimed the changes had adversely affected their employment conditions and livelihoods.

The workers said their problems worsened after the university appointed a new contractor. According to them, the contractor invoked provisions under the new labour codes to withdraw several existing benefits and rights. They alleged that the move increased insecurity and further affected working conditions.

The protesters urged the university administration to abolish the contract system. They also demanded proper implementation of Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) benefits. In addition, they sought fair working hours and overtime compensation.

The workers also demanded accountability for workplace accidents and deaths. They sought wage revisions based on experience and seniority. They further called for compassionate support for the families of deceased workers, along with better healthcare and insurance coverage.

The protesters said they would continue their indefinite agitation until the university administration addressed their demands, protected their rights and ensured fair and dignified working conditions.
