Two GHMC contract workers drowned in Langar Houz Lake while removing water hyacinth. Authorities have launched an investigation.

HYDERABAD: Two contract workers engaged by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) drowned in Langar Houz Lake while removing accumulated water hyacinth. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

According to police reports, the victims, identified as Kareem (40) and Sahil (22), were residents of Chandrayangutta in the Old City. They had been working for the past few days to clear the excessive growth of water hyacinth in the lake. While performing their task on Wednesday, they accidentally drowned.

Upon receiving information, police and rescue teams, including professional divers, rushed to the scene. After hours of effort, the bodies of the two workers were retrieved by the evening. The deceased were then shifted to Osmania General Hospital for postmortem examination. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi contacted the concerned authorities to ensure all necessary safety measures were being followed. MIM MLA Kausar Mohiuddin also spoke with the GHMC Commissioner, Zonal Commissioner, police, and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HYDRAA) officials to coordinate the rescue efforts.

Reports indicate that Kareem and Sahil had previously worked on similar water hyacinth removal operations at Shah Hatim Lake before starting their work at Langar Houz Lake. Authorities are reviewing safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
