Hyderabad: With inflows to reservoirs in the Godavari basin remaining low even two months into the monsoon, the Telangana irrigation department has decided to release water for a limited extent of ayacut.
At a meeting held on Wednesday, a high-level committee of irrigation engineers assessed the current storage and approved the release of water to 4.72 lakh acres under major and medium irrigation projects. The decision comes amid concerns over insufficient rainfall and storage shortfalls across the region.
Godavari basin water release targets 4.72 lakh acres due to low monsoon inflows
The committee estimated a requirement of 50.34 TMC ft to irrigate the sanctioned area. Officials stated that additional ayacut would be covered if inflows improve later in the season.
Under this plan, the Sri Ram Sagar Project will supply water to 2.35 lakh acres. Lift irrigation from Alisagar, Gutpa, and Manthani will also begin. Medium projects covered under this round include Upper Manair, Gaddenna Vagu, Gollavagu, Ralivagu, Ghanpur Anicut, NTR Sagar, Ramadugu, Nallavagu, Laknavaram, Malluruvagu, Sadar Math Anicut, Choutuppal Hanumanth Reddy, Palemvagu, and Neelwai.
Separately, in the Krishna basin, the Dindi project will release water to irrigate 13,000 acres.
