Hyderabad: Telangana will soon enact the Rohith Vemula Act to curb caste-based discrimination in higher education, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said on Saturday.
He met members of the Justice for Rohith Vemula Campaign Committee at Praja Bhavan and assured them of swift action. Bhatti said he would hold discussions with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to finalise the draft and begin legislative steps.
He also noted that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had written to the Chief Minister urging the state to introduce the Act. Bhatti said the move reflects the government’s commitment to social justice and student rights.
The committee submitted a draft of the Act, prepared by a similar panel in Karnataka. They asked the state to use the Karnataka model in shaping its own law.
The delegation also pressed for a transparent re-investigation into Rohith Vemula’s death. They demanded the withdrawal of non-bailable cases filed against 50 students and two faculty members after the incident.
Bhatti assured the group that he would convey their demands to the Chief Minister.
