Telangana DGP orders crackdown on criminal gangs and drug networks

Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police Dr. Jitender, IPS, directed senior police officers to intensify action against rising criminal gang activity across the state. Speaking at the first half-yearly crime review meeting at the DGP’s office, he urged effective use of stringent laws to curb gang operations. Additional DGP (CID) Charu Sinha chaired the session.

Jitender noted that members of several gangs had been serving prison sentences for the past two decades. He instructed Commissioners and SPs to keep close surveillance on gangs within their jurisdictions and take decisive measures.

The DGP also called for a strong crackdown on drug supply and abuse, warning that youth were destroying their futures through addiction. He stressed awareness programmes alongside strict enforcement and urged tracking supply routes into Telangana. T-NAB Director Sandeep Shandilya reported recent arrests of Nigerian nationals involved in drug trafficking.

Additional DGP M. Mahesh Bhagwat has called for tighter action against gangs like the Cheddi and Bhaveria groups, as well as networks operating in the “Parthi” style. He also recommended using the PD Act in cases involving fake seeds, if the situation demands it, and urged police to step up CCTV coverage in sensitive areas through the CCTNS network.

Women and Child Welfare Secretary Anita Ramachandran outlined initiatives under Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti, while Gandhi Medical College Professor Dr. Krupa L. Singh explained forensic practices critical to investigations. Senior police officials, including Additional DGPs V.V. Srinivasa Rao, Swati Lakra, Anil Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Jain, Stephen Raveendra, and DG Prisons Soumya Mishra, attended the meeting.
