Hyderabad: Telangana Police will roll out a state-wide road safety campaign named Arrive Alive, Director General of Police B. Shivadher Reddy announced on Saturday. He called on all vehicle drivers to use the AI-based ‘Safety Connect’ app, designed to monitor driving habits and improve safety compliance.
The announcement came during a review meeting held at the DGP’s office with senior police officers, traffic experts, and representatives from NGOs. The Arrive Alive campaign will run for 15 days in December, beginning with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 16.
‘Safety Connect’ AI app to support safer roads
Reddy underlined the critical role of technology in reducing road fatalities. He noted that road accident deaths are ten times higher than homicides annually. The Safety Connect app, he explained, monitors driving patterns and warns users about unsafe practices in real time.
To strengthen the campaign, the DGP asked officials to review best practices from other states and incorporate them into Telangana’s road safety strategy. He instructed that a detailed action plan be presented at the next coordination meeting on November 9 or 10.
Driving licence reforms and early education proposed
For long-term impact, Reddy proposed key reforms. He recommended making driving training classes mandatory before issuing permanent licences. Certified training should become a prerequisite, he said.
Additionally, he suggested that road safety awareness be introduced as part of the school syllabus. Road safety parks should also be established to educate the public, especially children.
Campaign needs coordinated effort, says DGP
Calling the initiative a movement rather than a one-time event, Reddy emphasised the need for a coordinated approach. He said the success of Arrive Alive depends on joint action by police, transport authorities, corporate entities, educational institutions, and civil society groups.
The meeting was attended by senior officers including Additional DGP Mahesh M. Bhagwat, ADGP Devendra Singh Chauhan, IG S. Chandrasekhar Reddy, Dr. M. Ramesh, K. Ramesh Naidu, and Joint CP (Traffic) D. Joel Davis. NGO representatives included Safety Connect founder Tanmayi Dixit, retired squadron leader Malcolm Wolfe, expert driver Naresh Raghavan, HCSC volunteer Lokendra Singh, IT manager Anil Surya, activist Vinay Vangala, and road safety advocate Vinod Kanumala.
