Hyderabad: Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu on Thursday announced plans to develop Madira municipality as a model urban body. The state government has sanctioned ₹140 crore to permanently resolve flooding issues in the town.
The Municipal and Urban Development Department released the funds under the Special Development Fund. Planned works include floodwater drains, redesigned canals, and a major retaining wall along the Vaira river.
These measures will support ongoing underground drainage projects that handle household wastewater.
Madira municipality flood relief gets major boost
Of the total ₹140 crore, ₹65 crore will fund the retaining wall along the Vaira river. Another ₹40 crore is earmarked for canals in flood-prone areas such as Illandu Padu, Madupalli, and Ambarupeta. A stretch from Shivala to Rayapatnam bridge is also covered.
Key canal routes will run from RCM Church Road to Saibaba temple via the railway underbridge, Pulakadam Vari Street, and the R&B Subdivision Office to Shivala. Additional lines will link Ramalayam to Yadava Bazaar, Rice Mill to the dumping yard, and the agricultural market to the same yard.
The government will invest ₹35 crore to redesign all existing stormwater drains. These changes aim to improve flow and reduce blockages during heavy rains.
Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka visited flood-prone areas with senior officials. He examined the topography and discussed technical requirements for the retaining wall. During the review, he consulted irrigation, municipal, and revenue officers.
He emphasized the importance of scientific surveys and feasibility checks before construction begins. The Deputy CM also reviewed a proposed bridge over the Vaira river connecting Madira and Madupalli.
He directed all departments to base their decisions on technical data, not political considerations.
The inspection included commissioner Arigela Sampath Kumar, tehsildar Rallabandi Rambabu, surveyor Usharani, and leaders from CPI, Congress, and TDP.
