Hyderabad: IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu accused the BJP of undermining democratic principles in the ongoing Rajya Sabha seat controversy involving Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan.
In a post on X, the minister said every political party had the right to increase its strength in legislatures.
However, he said parties must do so while respecting the Constitution, democratic values and the people’s mandate.
He alleged that using constitutional institutions to secure a Rajya Sabha seat amounted to an attack on democracy.
Rajya Sabha seat controversy triggers political criticism
Sridhar Babu said seeking an explanation before taking a decision was a fundamental principle of fairness in a democracy.
According to him, rejecting Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination without transparency or due process was unfortunate.
Further, he claimed the decision was not only an injustice to the Congress leader and her party.
He alleged that it also amounted to an insult to the Constitution, democratic values and the mandate of the people.
Meanwhile, the minister asserted that no individual or political party was above democracy or the Constitution.
He also warned against the misuse of power and democratic institutions.
Sridhar Babu said history had not been kind to those who undermined constitutional principles for political gain.
He added that the people were closely watching developments and would ultimately deliver their verdict.
The minister concluded by calling for respect for the Constitution, democracy and the people’s mandate.
Every political party has the right to increase its strength in legislatures. But it must be done by respecting the people’s verdict, the Constitution, and the spirit of democracy.
