Minister Sridhar vows better animal safety in disasters under new Telangana policy

Hyderabad: Animal Husbandry Minister Vakiti Sridhar has announced a comprehensive policy for animal welfare in Telangana, stating that he would act with humanity, not just official duty, to protect voiceless creatures during natural disasters.

Speaking at a disaster preparedness conference on Thursday, Sridhar said animals often sense natural calamities early. He stressed the need to minimise their suffering during floods, droughts, and other crises. The state government has launched the “Telangana Go Samrakshana” initiative and is preparing new guidelines for gosala (cow shelter) management, with a pilot shelter set up at Vemulawada.

He acknowledged the growing threats from global warming, wars, and climate events, noting that animals, like humans, face severe risks. Sridhar praised individuals and organisations who support animal rescue, calling their selfless work admirable in a self-centred world.

Telangana’s rural economy depends heavily on livestock and poultry, with over 26 lakh families relying on them for income. He noted that natural disasters wipe out livestock, causing families to lose their livelihoods. Recalling the heavy losses in the 2024 floods, Sridhar emphasised the need for coordinated action across departments to relocate animals to safer zones during emergencies.

The minister also announced that veterinary infrastructure will be strengthened across the state. Mobile veterinary units are being expanded to ensure timely care. He committed to holding consultations soon with NGOs working in the animal welfare sector.

Special Secretary for Disaster Management Arvind Kumar, Commissioner Ranganath, and Animal Husbandry Director Gopi were among the attendees.
