Telugu literary icon Sharada Ashokavardhan dies at 87

Hyderabad: Eminent Telugu writer and literary figure Sharada Ashokavardhan passed away at the age of 87 at her daughter’s residence in Banjara Hills on Wednesday night.

Sharada Ashokavardhan authored more than 80 books across genres including novels, poetry, plays, essays, lyrics, children’s literature and newspaper columns. She also worked for several years with All India Radio and earned recognition for her lyrical compositions.

Her popular works included “Manasaayera Madhava” and “Ganapathi Suprabatham”, which was rendered by renowned singer M. Balamuralikrishna. Many of her songs were composed by noted musician Palagummi Viswanadham.

Several literary works of Sharada Ashokavardhan were translated into Tamil, Kannada and Hindi. Her writings also became subjects for academic research and doctoral studies.

Sharada Ashokavardhan received several literary honours

Apart from her literary career, she served in key public service roles as Joint Director in the State Information Department and later as Director of Jawahar Bal Bhavan.

Sharada Ashokavardhan received three Nandi Awards during her career. She was also honoured with the Telugu University Award, Susheela Narayana Reddy Award and Rajyalakshmi Award for her contribution to literature.

She gained further recognition as a commentator for programmes organised by former Chief Minister and actor N. T. Rama Rao.

Sharada Ashokavardhan is survived by four daughters, including journalist, anchor and author Shailaja Suman.

Her death marked the end of a significant chapter in Telugu literary and cultural history.
