Seethakka backs women journalists’ right to question

Hyderabad: Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Dr. Danasari Anasuya Seethakka on Saturday said that treating women journalists who question those in power as enemies poses a serious threat to democratic values. She referred to their demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. She said democracy draws its strength from the courage to answer questions, not from suppressing them.

Seethakka spoke after she inaugurated the National Conference of Women Journalists as chief guest. The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) organised the conference at Tourism Plaza in Begumpet, Hyderabad. A large number of women journalists and media representatives from various States attended.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister stressed that women journalists must be able to do their jobs without fear or intimidation. She said bringing the truth to light and questioning those in power are their professional rights.

Minister seeks impartial examination of reports

Seethakka expressed serious concern over allegations of attacks and sexual harassment against women journalists covering protests that demand Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. She also called for an impartial examination of reports of cases against women journalists in connection with the incidents.

The Minister further alleged that attacks on women’s freedom and safety are increasing under the BJP and RSS. She said the issue warrants serious attention.
