Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the country was ready to welcome Rahul Gandhi as PM. He made the remarks at a public gathering in Neredcherla, Suryapet district, on Sunday, Sept.27.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said concerns about weakening democratic institutions had increased the demand for leadership committed to constitutional values. He also said public confidence in democratic institutions needed to be restored.
According to the minister, Rahul Gandhi had spent more than a decade raising concerns about the BJP’s methods of governance. Uttam Kumar Reddy described those methods as “authoritarian and fascistic” in his remarks.
He said Rahul Gandhi continued to raise issues affecting citizens despite sustained political attacks. The Congress leader, he added, had also spoken about protecting the independence of democratic institutions.
“Rahul Gandhi has stood firm through years of political attacks and attempts to silence him,” Uttam Kumar Reddy said. He added that Gandhi had continued to raise public issues and defend the values on which the Republic was built.
Rahul Gandhi as PM and democratic institutions
Meanwhile, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the country was now looking to Rahul Gandhi to lead India as Prime Minister. He linked that expectation to wider concerns about democracy and institutional independence.
The minister said democracy should not be measured only through elections. He stressed the importance of independent institutions and the ability of elected representatives to question the government.
Uttam Kumar Reddy also highlighted freedom of expression and dissent as important democratic values. In addition, he stressed the need to ensure that every vote was counted fairly.
The remarks placed Rahul Gandhi as PM at the centre of the minister’s comments on constitutional values and democratic institutions. He said these principles were important to maintaining public confidence in India’s democratic system.
