Rachakonda police warn of marriage scams on WhatsApp, urge caution online

Hyderabad: Rachakonda police on Sunday issued a fresh warning about rising cyber scams. Fraudsters are targeting youth through fake marriage and live-in offers on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.

The police, through their official X handle @RachakondaCop, shared an awareness video. The tweet cautioned that unknown women are initiating friendly chats and gaining trust. Later, they use fake promises of marriage or cohabitation to extort money through blackmail.

“These scammers build emotional trust through casual chats. Once the victim is drawn in, they demand money or begin to blackmail,” the police said.

They urged the public to avoid replying to suspicious messages or calls. People should also avoid clicking on unknown links or accepting random video calls.

Victims should report to 1930 or local police

The police advised victims to call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or approach the nearest police station. Quick reporting can help prevent further damage.

This tweet has gained traction online. Many users praised the police for their proactive awareness efforts. According to officials, this campaign is part of a broader initiative to curb online frauds.
