Nigerian national deported from Hyderabad for illegal stay and drug links

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) deported a 38-year-old Nigerian national, Obasi James Victor, on Tuesday for overstaying illegally in India and allegedly involving himself in drug trafficking.

H-NEW officers detained Victor in Tolichowki after finding him loitering under suspicious circumstances. During questioning, he failed to show valid documents and admitted to overstaying without a passport or visa.

Victor entered India on a tourist visa on December 31, 2011, landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. He initially dealt in cloth exports to Nigeria. Later, he started a restaurant in Delhi named “William African Restaurant.” He is married and had been staying in Delhi with his family.

Over time, Victor’s documents expired, but he remained in the country. Officials said he became involved with drug peddlers and trafficked narcotics to earn money and sustain a lavish lifestyle.

H-NEW finalises deportation with FRRO

After his detention, H-NEW launched the deportation process through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Hyderabad. As Victor had no valid travel documents, the team secured an Emergency Travel Certificate from the Nigeria High Commission in New Delhi and obtained an exit permit from FRRO.

They booked a flight from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, to Lagos, Nigeria. Inspector G.S. Daniel led the escort team that deported Victor in the early hours of January 13, 2026.

Hyderabad Police appeal for public cooperation

Hyderabad Police warned that several foreign nationals overstay in India even after their medical, student, or business visas expire. Many of them, officials said, turn to illegal drug trade, which fuels addiction and harms society.

Police urged residents to stay alert and report any suspected drug abuse to H-NEW at 8712661601. Parents were especially advised to monitor their children’s activities closely. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to building a drug-free Hyderabad.

Inspector G.S. Daniel, Sub-Inspector C. Venkata Ramulu, and the H-NEW staff carried out the operation under the supervision of Vaibhav Gaikwad, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Task Force/H-NEW, Hyderabad City.
