Municipal department puts one lakh water connections in 83 days

Hyderabad: The municipal department has added one lakh water tap connections online under its 100-day action plan, aiming to boost revenue and curb irregularities. Officials said the move would bring in an additional ₹7 crore every month.

The department identified major gaps in revenue collection from water supply and therefore shifted its focus to digitisation. In addition, it is working on separate fee structures for domestic and commercial connections to prevent misuse.

Telangana targets full digitisation of 16 lakh connections by March

Excluding GHMC, Telangana has 15 municipal corporations, 144 municipalities, and two new urban bodies Indresham and Jinnaram taking the total to 159. Together, these cover nearly 16 lakh water connections.

So far, officials have digitised nine lakh connections, which generate close to ₹59 crore every month. Moreover, with 83 days of the 100-day programme completed, they added another one lakh connections. Senior officials instructed municipal commissioners to bring the remaining six lakh connections online by March-end.

At present, municipalities charge between ₹30 and ₹100 depending on the type of connection. However, the absence of digital records earlier caused the department to lose crores in revenue. Many apartments and commercial complexes had been using multiple taps while still paying domestic charges.

Furthermore, residents often complained about households installing motors to draw excess water and about old connections remaining active even after new ones were sanctioned. Authorities said the online system now helps prevent such irregularities and ensures fair billing across all urban local bodies.
