KTR questions Speaker’s decision in Jagtial MLA defection case

Hyderabad: BRS working president K T Rama Rao on Wednesday questioned the Assembly Speaker’s decision to give a clean chit to the Jagtial MLA in the defection case.

In a post on X, KTR said the Speaker’s repeated rejection of disqualification petitions struck at the spirit of the Constitution. According to him, such decisions weakened democratic accountability.

KTR said ample evidence existed in the public domain. However, he alleged that the Speaker ignored it.

For instance, he pointed to photographs and videos showing the Chief Minister welcoming Jagtial BRS MLA Sanjay Kumar into the Congress by draping a party scarf. In his view, these visuals clearly established defection.

Therefore, KTR questioned how the Speaker could claim there was no evidence. He said such reasoning lacked credibility.

Moreover, KTR alleged that the Speaker disregarded Supreme Court rulings and the people’s mandate. As a result, he said inaction against defected MLAs damaged democratic norms.

Meanwhile, referring to the Jagtial municipal elections, KTR said the Speaker granted a clean chit at a sensitive time. Notably, Congress leader Jivan Reddy was publicly criticising the party during the polls.

Consequently, KTR said the decision hurt the dignity of the Speaker’s office. He further alleged that it reflected clear political bias.

At the same time, KTR claimed the Congress was still reeling from setbacks in the panchayat elections. Hence, he said the party feared by-elections.

Additionally, KTR said urban voters were angry over the Chief Minister’s failures and alleged deception. According to him, this public anger had shaken the government.

Finally, KTR warned that shielding defected MLAs would invite a response from the people. He asserted that the issue would be settled in the public arena.
