HYDERABAD: BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao has demanded that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy resign in the wake of the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) damning report on the Lagacherla incident. He said Revanth Reddy should accept moral responsibility for the police excesses, given his roles as Chief Minister, Home Minister, and MLA of Kodangal, and should “bow his head in shame and resign”.
KTR made these comments on Tuesday after victims of the Lagacherla incident visited his residence in Nandinagar. He alleged that the police committed severe excesses against local residents, including women, and that the NHRC investigation team had confirmed instances of police brutality and unlawful land acquisition.
Speaking to the media, KTR stated that police officers responsible for committing atrocities and reportedly abusing women should be immediately dismissed. He said, “I demand that the Revanth Reddy-led government act against the officers who tortured people in Lagacherla and violated young girls.”
He cited the NHRC’s findings, which reportedly confirmed that the land acquisition process was carried out illegally. “If this kind of covert land grabbing continues, it will lead to contempt of court,” he warned.
KTR further said the NHRC report revealed that Lagacherla farmers were subjected to brutal physical violence. He criticised Revanth Reddy for allegedly orchestrating such acts in his own constituency. “If he had even a shred of dignity or shame, he would have resigned by now. But Revanth Reddy has neither,” he remarked.
He added that Lagacherla women had informed the NHRC team that the police had sexually assaulted them. “Tribal women told NHRC officials that the police raided the village at night, beat them on their thighs, and even threatened more severe violence if they spoke about it before a judge,” KTR alleged.
The incident has sparked outrage, with opposition leaders demanding accountability and strict action against those involved.
