Hyderabad: BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao said the panchayat election results signalled a sharp political setback for the Congress government in Telangana. He argued that public dissatisfaction had grown steadily and claimed the ruling party would face deeper losses in the coming months. Rao added that the panchayat election results showed increasing support for the BRS from Adilabad to Alampur.
He congratulated BRS-backed sarpanch and ward member candidates who won despite what he described as strong pressure from the ruling party. Moreover, he said their performance reflected the party’s organisational strength. He also noted that cadres resisted alleged intimidation throughout the first phase of the polls.
Rao criticised what he called violent tactics by the Congress. Additionally, he said BRS workers stood firm and confronted each obstacle without hesitation.
KTR links panchayat election results to rising rural discontent
Rao said the Chief Minister’s district tours and campaign events failed to lift the Congress vote share. Furthermore, he claimed the ruling party did not cross 44 per cent of the seats it contested in several areas. He described the outcome as clear proof of growing anti-incumbency.
He argued that early expectations of an advantage for the ruling party collapsed due to what he called administrative failures. According to him, the panchayat election results confirmed that the BRS remained the only effective alternative in Telangana. He added that the BJP continued to lack meaningful presence in the State.
He said many villagers believed development would not progress under Congress rule. For this reason, he pointed to several areas where Congress candidates lost by narrow margins of ten or twenty votes. Consequently, he said the “countdown for Congress” had begun in rural Telangana.
Rao accused the government of misleading the public through guarantees and welfare schemes. He said rural voters remembered concerns linked to pensions, the Mahalakshmi programme and the gold pledge. These issues, he said, shaped voter sentiment and influenced the outcome.
He said farmers also expressed frustration over delays in urea supply, the bonus promise and challenges linked to crop sales. Moreover, he said villages that progressed for a decade had faced setbacks in the last two years. He added that sanitation problems and rising fuel costs forced villagers to reconsider their support for the ruling party.
