Khammam beekeeping unit opened by DG Prisons

Hyderabad: DG Prisons and CS Dr. Soumya Mishra opened the 4th Khammam beekeeping unit at District Jail Khammam, adding another step to the department’s reform work.

Senior officers joined the programme. SP Sunil Dutt, IG Prisons N. MuraliBabu and DIG Prisons M. Sampath were present. In his welcome, DIG Sampath said the department now blends inmate welfare with simple, nature-friendly plans. He added that these efforts give inmates useful skills.

IG MuraliBabu noted that Telangana prisons have large green spaces that suit beekeeping. He said the department also supports seed-ball work and other green tasks. Assistant Director of Industries S.M. Khalid Akther explained that the goal is to make raw honey and teach inmates hands-on beekeeping.

DG Mishra said the launch of the Khammam beekeeping unit marked an important moment. She pointed to the pilot at PAC Cherlapalli and its later growth in Sangareddy and Nizamabad. She also said beekeeping builds patience, teamwork and respect for nature.

Later in the day, DG Mishra visited Sub Jail Yellandu. During the visit, she checked the gate, fence, barracks, wash areas and welfare points. She also reviewed registers, visitor checks and duty plans. She told staff to follow each rule without fail.
