Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi President Kalvakuntla Kavitha accused the BJP-led Centre of misleading the public on the caste census issue.
Speaking at a caste census round-table meeting in Hyderabad, Kavitha criticised the upcoming census document. According to her, the document continued to list only SC and ST categories.
At the same time, she said the Centre grouped OBCs and other castes under a vague “others” column. As a result, she warned that castes and sub-castes would face serious injustice.
Kavitha said caste classification already varies across states. Therefore, she said the confusion would deepen for the OBC community, which forms about 56 per cent of the population.
Kavitha questions clarity in caste census categories
Moreover, Kavitha said the caste column would not provide clarity. She pointed to EWS certificates issued to economically weaker sections among upper castes.
In this context, she questioned where such beneficiaries would fit under the current census format. Hence, she alleged that the BJP deliberately designed the document to create confusion.
Meanwhile, Kavitha said caste census debates were taking place across the country. Accordingly, she said Telangana must also convey its views to the Centre.
Further, Kavitha said Telangana Jagruti would collect caste and sub-caste data in the state. Subsequently, the organisation would submit the data to the Centre.
However, she said the Congress government should have taken up this task. Finally, Kavitha criticised both the BRS and Congress for remaining silent on the census document.
