Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that Telangana will face heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days due to Cyclone Montha forming over the Bay of Bengal. The department said the storm will mainly impact northern and eastern Telangana districts.
Cyclone Montha to cross near Kakinada on Tuesday night
According to the IMD, Cyclone Montha will cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada on Tuesday night. Because of its impact, several Telangana districts will see torrential rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. The rainfall may range between 5 cm and 20 cm. Consequently, the IMD urged district authorities to stay alert and prepare for possible emergencies.
IMD issues red and orange alerts for Telangana districts
In its weather bulletin, the IMD issued a red alert for Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Kothagudem, Khammam, and Mahabubabad districts, predicting extremely heavy rain. Meanwhile, the department issued an orange alert for Komaram Bheem, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Khammam, and Warangal districts. These areas may record moderate to heavy rainfall, officials said.
Heavy rain is likely to continue in northern Telangana
The IMD forecasts that the rainfall will continue on Wednesday as well. Heavy showers are likely in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem, Mancherial, Nirmal, Peddapalli, Mulugu, and Bhupalpally districts. As a precaution, the State Disaster Management Authority directed district administrations to maintain full preparedness and activate emergency teams.
Officials advise the public to stay cautious amid Cyclone Montha
Authorities asked residents in low-lying areas to move to safer places and avoid unnecessary travel. The Agriculture Department advised farmers to protect ready-to-harvest crops from damage. In addition, the Fisheries Department asked fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next two days. The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre said it is closely tracking Cyclone Montha and will continue to share real-time updates.
