Hyderabad: Hyderabad Zoo has recorded more than 90 animal births over the past year, marking a significant boost to its conservation and scientific breeding programmes. The latest additions include six lion cubs, making them one of the zoo’s most notable recent attractions.
The births occurred between April last year and the present across several species at Nehru Zoological Park. Zoo authorities said the successful breeding reflects sustained efforts in wildlife conservation and scientific animal management.
Among the latest arrivals are three African lion cubs and three Asiatic lion cubs. Zoo veterinarians are monitoring all six cubs under continuous care. Consequently, the total lion population at the zoo has increased from 17 to 23. The zoo currently houses five African lions and 18 Asiatic lions, including the newborn cubs.
Meanwhile, the zoo also recorded the birth of six Bengal tiger cubs during the same period. The litter includes three white tiger cubs and three yellow Bengal tiger cubs. As a result, the zoo now has 10 Bengal tigers and 10 white tigers.
Hyderabad Zoo strengthens wildlife conservation efforts
To maintain genetic diversity, zoo authorities continue to exchange lions with other zoological parks across the country as part of a coordinated breeding programme. Officials said the initiative has helped sustain healthy breeding among big cats.
Further, several other species also registered successful breeding. Since last year, the zoo has welcomed more than 18 mouse deer fawns, eight blackbucks and two hog deer fawns.
In addition, the last three months saw the birth of four ostrich chicks, three fox pups and two golden pheasant chicks. The zoo also recorded the birth of a four-horned antelope (Chousingha) calf and a sambar deer fawn.
Zoo Curator J. Vasantha said Hyderabad Zoo has earned national recognition for conserving the endangered mouse deer. She said the zoo has bred more than 500 mouse deer since 2010 and supplied them to tiger reserves, including Amrabad and Kawal, as part of conservation efforts.
According to the curator, scientific breeding practices and sustained animal care have played a key role in the zoo’s breeding success across multiple species.
