Gutha Sukhender Reddy questions Nalgonda irrigation water shortage

Hyderabad: Telangana Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy accused some officials of pressuring political leaders to restrict Nalgonda irrigation water supplies. He said farmers in the district were struggling without adequate water for cultivation.

Gutha spoke informally to the media in Nalgonda on Wednesday. During the interaction, he questioned demands to reserve all available water for Palamuru. He also challenged opposition to allocating water to the Dindi project.

“Why should anyone demand that water not be allocated to Dindi?” he asked. Gutha further questioned why officials were pressuring the Chief Minister over water supplies to Nalgonda.

Nalgonda irrigation water shortage raises questions over allocation

The Council chairman said the Chief Minister and other decision-makers should not yield to pressure when deciding water allocations. Instead, he argued, they should make decisions without favouring one region at another’s expense.

According to Gutha, irrigation currently reaches only seven lakh acres in Nalgonda district. He said demands to reserve all water for Palamuru were unreasonable.

He also pointed to the inauguration of reservoirs with a combined capacity of 25 TMC in Palamuru. However, Gutha said authorities had yet to prepare a clear plan identifying the water sources for those reservoirs.

His remarks focused on the irrigation shortage in Nalgonda, pressure over water allocation and the lack of clarity about supplies for Palamuru’s reservoirs.
