Hyderabad: The Musi River rejuvenation project in Hyderabad has reached a key milestone after the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved the first phase. Following the approval, the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation (MRDCL) invited tenders for works spanning 21 kilometres across two packages. Officials estimate the first phase will cost ₹7,345 crore.
According to the MRDCL notification, bidders can access tender documents online from October 15. They must submit their bids by November 26. Officials expect to select a qualified contractor by the end of the month, subject to the tender process.
The first phase covers two stretches along the river system. Under Zone 1A, contractors will develop 9.8 kilometres along the Eesa river, from Himayatsagar to Bapu Ghat. Meanwhile, Zone 1B covers 11.2 kilometres along the Musi, between Gandipet and Bapu Ghat.
Musi River rejuvenation plan includes flood protection and bridges
The project includes river cleaning, retaining walls to prevent flooding and riverfront beautification. In addition, contractors will build roads, bridges and rubber dams. The plan also features an iconic cable-stayed bridge on the Outer Ring Road.
The wider project spans 55 kilometres. The Asian Development Bank will provide a loan of up to ₹4,500 crore, while the Telangana government will meet the remaining cost. However, the current tenders cover only the first phase.
Authorities aim to complete the first-phase works by December 2027. Meanwhile, officials continue land acquisition in the Rajendranagar area. Some residents have objected to the proposed compensation.
Once the tender process ends, MRDCL expects construction activity to accelerate. The first phase will cover the two designated stretches along the Eesa and Musi rivers, with a combined length of 21 kilometres.
