GHMC holds orientation for new officers on city’s health and sanitation systems

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Wednesday organised a comprehensive orientation programme on GHMC health and sanitation systems. This was for newly appointed Zonal Commissioners and Assistant/Deputy Executive Engineers (AEs/DEEs) at its head office.

Waste management, public health and Swachh achievements highlighted

The session aimed to equip officials with a full understanding of Hyderabad’s sanitation infrastructure and ongoing public health initiatives. Senior personnel from multiple departments took part, including AMOHs, veterinary officials, entomologists, solid waste staff, EPTRI representatives, and contractors from HiMSW and C&D waste units.

Officials were briefed on GHMC’s sanitation operations covering 2,053 sq km and serving 1.34 crore residents across 300 wards. Hyderabad generates 9,100 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, with a per capita generation of 680.59 grams. The briefing detailed the work of sanitation teams, including SWGs, sanitary field assistants, inspectors, and supervisors.

GHMC’s integrated waste management model, operated through a PPP with Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd, was presented as a structured system covering primary to tertiary collection. Waste-to-energy plants at Jawaharnagar were also discussed, producing 48 MW, with another 24 MW underway. Additionally, Dundigal produces 14.5 MW alongside C&D waste processing plants with 2,000 MT/day capacity.

Officials reviewed GHMC’s national rankings, including 6th place in Swachh Survekshan 2025 (million-plus cities). They also reported a 7-Star Garbage-Free City rating, and ODF++ and Water Plus certifications. Preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2025–26 were also shared. The focus was on visible cleanliness, source segregation, sanitation coverage, and public engagement.

Further presentations covered vector-borne disease control, food safety enforcement under the FSS Act, and veterinary services.

GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) Raghu Prasad urged all departments to maintain coordinated efforts. This would retain Hyderabad’s leading position in urban health and sanitation. The event concluded with discussions on operational hurdles, best practices, and area-specific strategies.
