Hyderabad: Former Wyra MLA Banoth Madan Lal passed away on Tuesday morning in Hyderabad after suffering a cardiac arrest, cutting short what doctors had described as a hopeful recovery. He was 61.
Four days ago, Lal had complained of acute abdominal pain and was admitted to a corporate hospital in Hyderabad. Though doctors had indicated his condition was improving and he might be discharged within two days, he succumbed unexpectedly early today.
Born on 3 May 1963 in Erlapudi village of Raghunathapalem mandal, Khammam district, Madan Lal completed his BA from Osmania University. His political career began with a 2009 contest from Wyra as an independent, where he lost to CPI’s Banoth Chandravathi by a margin of 47,539 votes.
In 2012, he joined the YSR Congress Party and contested again in 2014 – this time successfully – defeating TDP’s Banoth Balaji by over 10,000 votes. He later switched to the BRS and contested the 2018 Assembly elections, but narrowly lost to independent candidate Ramulu Naik by 2,013 votes.
Despite his electoral setback, Madan Lal remained actively involved with the BRS in recent years.
Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. BRS chief and former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao described his death as an irreparable loss to both the party and the Wyra constituency. In his tribute, Rao highlighted Lal’s commitment to public service.
BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao remembered him as a principled leader devoted to the welfare of tribal, marginalised, and backward communities. Senior party leaders, including former minister T. Harish Rao and MLC K. Kavitha, echoed similar sentiments, calling Lal’s demise a significant loss for the region’s vulnerable populations.
