DGP Shivdhar Reddy leads mega blood donation drive in Hyderabad to honour police martyrs

Hyderabad: Director General of Police (DGP) Shivdhar Reddy said that donating blood means giving life to someone in need. He launched a mega blood donation drive at the Central Armed Reserve (CAR) headquarters in Hyderabad’s Petlaburj on Monday, marking Police Martyrs’ Commemoration Week.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar joined him in inaugurating the programme. Moreover, the city police arranged nine donation camps across all zones, targeting 3,500 donors. The initiative aimed to honour police personnel who sacrificed their lives while performing their duties.

Addressing the gathering, DGP Reddy said road accidents claim nearly 8,000 lives in Telangana every year. He pointed out that many victims die simply because blood does not reach them in time. “When we donate blood, we save a life,” he said.

Furthermore, he appreciated Commissioner Sajjanar’s contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic, recalling that he had organised several blood donation camps. Reddy also congratulated all police personnel who came forward to donate blood. He urged the public to view blood donation not just as charity but as a shared responsibility.

Commissioner Sajjanar explained that the collected blood would help thalassemia patients and others who require emergency transfusions. He said nine camps were arranged across Hyderabad with a goal of collecting 3,500 units of blood.

Additionally, Sajjanar noted that the drive honoured police martyrs who laid down their lives for public safety. “Many people die every year because blood does not reach them quickly,” he said. “Therefore, every citizen should step forward and donate blood to save lives.”

He also added that timely blood supply could make the difference between life and death during road accidents or major surgeries. Finally, he appealed to the public to adopt blood donation as a moral and social duty.
