Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has ordered the creation of a fully underground electricity network for Telangana’s proposed Bharat Future City, directing officials to ensure that no power poles, towers, or visible transmission lines are present in the entire area. Even high-tension cables are to be shifted underground or positioned in secure zones. The decision was taken during a review meeting held in Hyderabad with senior officials from the Energy Department and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka in attendance.
The Chief Minister instructed the department to prepare a detailed three-year electricity plan in line with Telangana’s target of becoming a $1 trillion economy. He told officials to modernise energy infrastructure across the state, shift to clean and sustainable sources, and prepare for rising demand from irrigation projects, Metro Rail extensions, new railway corridors, data centres, and industrial zones. Current demand stands at 17,162 MW, up 9.8% from last year, and is projected to reach 18,138 MW in 2025–26 and 31,808 MW by 2034–35.
The Energy Department was asked to prioritise renewable energy expansion, particularly solar. The CM directed that solar power generation be taken up along the Outer Ring Road and that feasibility studies be done for placing solar panels over footpaths and drainage canals within GHMC limits. He also called for partnerships with major global companies to support Telangana’s clean energy ambitions.
In addition to the Future City plan, the CM ordered the launch of a smart pole pilot project in select parts of Greater Hyderabad including areas around the Secretariat, Necklace Road, and KBR Park. These installations would be evaluated for aesthetics and functional efficiency before wider rollout.
Officials briefed the CM that this year’s peak demand was met without any disruption, setting a benchmark for uninterrupted service. He asked the department to extend this reliability to upcoming mass transit corridors, new satellite townships, and the proposed Data City. The CM also emphasised close coordination with HMDA to ensure adequate power provisioning for radial roads and peripheral developments. He directed the department to explore pumped storage options to back intermittent renewables.
