Centre, Telangana push joint policing on cybercrime, drugs and jail reforms

Hyderabad: Senior officials from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Telangana Home Department met in Hyderabad on Tuesday to discuss joint policing mechanisms, with a focus on criminal law rollout, cybercrime, narcotics control, and prison reforms.

Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired the session at Pragathi Bhavan, joined by Telangana Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao, Home Special Chief Secretary Ravi Gupta, DGP Jitender and other top state police brass. Officials briefed the Centre on how Telangana was implementing the new criminal laws and coordinating inter-agency enforcement through a Joint Working Group.

The Centre reviewed the state’s crime control roadmap, praising police for drug seizure efforts and proactive law enforcement. Union officials were briefed on notification of new rules, training updates, use of forensic tech and AI tools, and disaster preparedness at the district level.

Telangana flagged growing online fraud and misinformation, seeking Central support for AI-enabled cyber labs and dedicated security squads. With drug smuggling hotspots expanding, the state pushed for tighter intelligence coordination under the NDPS Act.

Prison overcrowding, lack of safe detention spaces, and outdated infrastructure dominated discussions on jail reforms. Telangana requested Central assistance for new high-security facilities and digital forensics upgrades, including DNA and cyber evidence labs.

The two sides also reviewed preparedness for monsoon disasters, fire emergencies and public event policing. Communal tensions, political flashpoints and law-and-order responses over the past six months came under detailed scrutiny.

The Centre was represented by Joint Secretaries Prashant Lokey Sitaram and Paushami Basu, CIC Secretary Neeraj Kumar Bansod, ADG Ravi Joseph Lokku, NCRB Joint Director Sanjay Mathur, SICI DDG Shashikant Sharma, and CURD-3 DS Rajendra Singh. From Telangana, DG (Cyber Bureau) Shikha Goel, ADGP Mahesh Bhagwat, DG (Fire Services) Nagireddy, IG Ramesh, CPs CV Anand, Sudheer Babu and Avinash Mohanti attended.
